Road Transport Tanks

Industrial Plastics is the only Queensland Company to have been granted approval by the Queensland Department of Transport to build dual laminate demountable road transport tanks. All tankers manufactured by Industrial Plastics are designed to meet all current and relevant standards including AS2809, AS2634 and AS4100.

One of the latest tanks to be commissioned is a 9000 litre, twin compartment (2 x 4,500 litre) unit and is for the transportation of hazardous chemicals including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, sodium hypochlorite and caustic soda.

Here is an example of the tank which incorporates a PVC lining and CPVC schedule 80 pipe work and CPVC ball valves for chemical resistance coupled with glass reinforced plastic (GRP) skin for strength. Man hole fittings are 316 stainless sheathed with PVC to maintain chemical resistance. Current sizes available are 9000 litre and 6000 litre.

The external surface of the GRP is finished to a high standard and can be painted with two- pot polyurethane.

Advantages of GRP road tankers over conventional stainless steel or lined mild steel alternative include the following:

• The initial cost of GRP units for a particular application usually compares very favourable with metal alternatives
• The tare weight of the units is significantly less than metal, particularly in the case of lined mild steel. This means a continuous payload advantage.
• Maintenance costs are less. Weld failure which may occur in stainless steel units carrying chlorides are avoided. Adhesive failures in the lining of mild steel tanks which are commonly used for transporting 98% Sulphuric Acids are also avoided.
• The appearance of GRP units is attractive and requires little attention and much less frequent painting.
• The chemical resistance of the materials in construction is superior to the resistance of stainless steel and nearly all organic chemicals used in industry can be safely carried.
